App Store Keyword Tracking: How to Monitor Rankings, Compare Competitors and Choose an ASO Tool
App store keyword tracking can show where an app appears for selected searches in the Apple App Store or Google Play.
That information is useful. But the ranking number is only the beginning.
A keyword can look attractive and still be a poor match for the product. A ranking can improve without producing a measurable increase in installs. A position can also change while competitors, demand and the listing are changing at the same time.
The useful work is deciding which keywords matter, what the movement means and what the team should investigate next.
Here is how I would approach it.
What Is App Store Keyword Tracking
App store keyword tracking is the process of monitoring where an app ranks for selected search terms in a specific store and market over time.
It is one part of App Store Optimization. ASO also includes keyword research, metadata, creative presentation, ratings, reviews, localisation and conversion. If those areas are new to you, start with ASOagent's guide to what ASO is before building a larger tracking system.
A useful keyword tracker should help you answer questions such as:
- Which relevant searches show my app
- Where is the app gaining or losing positions
- Which competitors rank for the same terms
- How does performance differ between countries
- Which keyword gaps may deserve further research
It should not be treated as proof of why a ranking moved or how many installs one keyword produced unless the supporting data can establish that connection.
Step 1: Start With Relevant App Store Keywords
The largest keyword list is not automatically the most useful one.
Start with the language people might use when looking for the problem your app solves. Include the category, important features, use cases, audiences and meaningful alternatives.
For a budgeting app, broad terms such as budget app may matter. But more specific searches can reveal clearer needs: shared budget, bill reminder, expense tracker for freelancers or envelope budgeting.
For every keyword, ask:
- Does the app genuinely satisfy this search
- Would a user understand the connection from the listing
- Is the term relevant in this country and language
- Can the product support the expectation created by the keyword
Relevance comes first. Ranking highly for a poorly matched term can bring the wrong expectation and make the rest of the store journey harder.
Step 2: Set the Store Market and Date
A keyword position needs context.
Record the store, country, language and date or date range behind the result. Apple App Store and Google Play data should be reviewed separately, and a position in one market should not be presented as a global ranking.
Keep the scope consistent when comparing periods. If the keyword set, market or measurement method changes, record that change before interpreting the trend.
Step 3: Read Keyword Rankings in Context
A keyword ranking tells you where the app appeared for that tracked term at the time it was measured.
It does not tell you the whole result.
Look at several signals together:
| Signal | What it can tell you | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Current rank | Where the app appears for the tracked term | Why the app holds that position |
| Ranking change | Whether the measured position moved during the selected period | That one update caused the movement |
| Keyword visibility | How broadly the app appears across the tracked keyword set | How many installs the visibility produced |
| Search volume | The relative demand indicated by the data provider | Exact searches or future demand unless documented |
| Difficulty | How competitive a term may be according to the provider | That ranking is impossible or guaranteed |
| Competitor position | How another app ranks for the same term and market | That its metadata or creative caused the advantage |
Search volume and difficulty scores can be useful for prioritisation. Interpret them according to the provider's methodology and avoid presenting a directional score as an exact count unless it is defined that way.
Step 4: Compare Competitor Keyword Rankings
Competitor keyword tracking shows where apps overlap and where another app has visibility that yours does not.
I would review shared keywords, relevant competitor only terms, ranking gaps and groups of related searches. Then I would check whether the competitor actually serves the same audience and user need.
Do not copy a competitor's keyword list without that check. They may offer different features, target another market or rank for terms that are not valuable to your product.
For a broader comparison of keywords, metadata, creatives and ratings, use a separate competitor report rather than asking one ranking table to explain the entire market.
Step 5: Connect Keywords With App Store Metadata
Keyword research becomes useful when it improves how the listing explains the product.
Review the metadata fields available in each store. Use relevant terms naturally and make sure the language accurately describes the app. The title, subtitle or short description, keyword field where applicable and full description should support the same positioning.
Do not force every tracked keyword into the listing. Repetition can make the copy harder to understand, and a term should not be used when the product cannot support the claim.
ASOagent's ASO generation uses keyword, competitor and market context to generate titles, subtitles, keyword fields and descriptions for the Apple App Store and Google Play. The resulting draft still needs product review for accuracy, positioning and compliance.
Step 6: Keep Rankings Separate From Conversion
Keyword visibility helps people find the listing. The listing still needs to help them decide whether to install.
That means keyword tracking should sit beside product page views, conversion, installs and retained users where those measures are available. A ranking gain can be encouraging while the business result remains unclear.
If visibility improves but conversion does not, review the match between the keyword, the listing and the product. The traffic may be poorly matched, the screenshots may not explain the benefit or the listing may create an expectation the app does not confirm.
Those are possibilities to investigate. The ranking change alone cannot tell you which one is true.
Step 7: Decide What an ASO Keyword Tracking Tool Must Do
There is no universally best ASO keyword tracking tool for every company.
A single app in one country has different requirements from an agency managing several portfolios across many markets. Start with the work the tool needs to support.
I would check whether it provides:
- Keyword rankings for the stores and countries you manage
- Historical movement across a clear date range
- Competitor keyword tracking
- Search volume and difficulty with understandable definitions
- Keyword discovery and grouping that keeps relevance visible
- Exports or reports your team can actually use
- Links between research, metadata and later performance review
- Access controls and integrations appropriate to your organisation
Then test the workflow. Can the team find an opportunity, explain why it matters, turn it into an action and compare the next period without rebuilding the process by hand?
A long feature list is less useful if the product does not support that sequence.
Step 8: Use ASOagent for Keyword Tracking and Analysis
ASOagent's keyword rankings product includes search volume and difficulty scores, competitor keyword tracking, country level rank tracking and AI powered keyword suggestions.
That gives app teams a way to follow where an app stands and where similar apps have visibility.
The ranking analysis report combines current keyword rankings, search volume and difficulty, competitor comparisons and prioritised opportunities. ASOagent states that reports can be generated on demand, weekly or monthly and exported as PDF or CSV.
Use those results as a starting point for judgement. Confirm that the keywords match the app, check the selected market and review the listing before making a change.
Step 9 Build a Repeatable Keyword Review
After the baseline is set, repeat the same checks.
Keep the store, market, keyword set and reporting period consistent when possible. Record metadata updates and other important events so the team knows what changed between reviews.
Then compare:
- Current positions and ranking distribution
- Keywords gaining or losing visibility
- Competitor movement for the same terms
- Relevant keyword gaps
- Store performance measures available to the team
A pre and post comparison can show what moved after an update. It should not be presented as proof that the update caused every movement, because demand, competitors and store systems may also have changed.
This is where broader ASO intelligence becomes useful. It connects keyword rankings with competitors, metadata, creatives, ratings, markets and changes over time instead of treating one position as the complete result.
Frequently Asked Questions About App Store Keyword Tracking
What Is the Best ASO Tool for Keyword Tracking
The best tool is the one that covers the stores, markets, competitors, reporting and workflow your team needs. Compare the data definitions, country coverage, ranking history, competitor tracking, exports and the path from research to action. ASOagent is one option with country level rank tracking, competitor keyword tracking, search volume and difficulty scores, keyword suggestions and ranking reports.
How Often Should I Track App Store Keywords
The right frequency depends on how quickly the category moves and how often the team can respond. Track often enough to identify meaningful movement, but compare consistent periods and avoid changing strategy because of every short term fluctuation. Weekly or monthly reporting may suit regular reviews, while major launches or unusual ranking changes may justify a closer check.
Should I Track the Same Keywords in Every Country
Not automatically. User language, competitors and search behaviour can differ by market. Start with local relevance and track each country separately. A direct translation may miss the way people actually describe the need.
Does a Higher Keyword Ranking Mean More Installs
Not necessarily. A higher position may improve visibility, but installs also depend on demand, relevance, the listing, ratings, product fit and other parts of the acquisition journey. Measure ranking movement alongside the business results available to you.
Can a Keyword Tracking Tool Explain Why Rankings Changed
It can show useful context, including timing, competitor movement and changes across a keyword set. It cannot make store algorithms transparent or prove a single cause when several factors may have moved at the same time.
The Ranking Is the Starting Point
App store keyword tracking gives teams a clearer view of where an app appears in search.
The value comes from what happens next.
